Cool new band alert: AZUL TOGA

The other night, during the lunar eclipse, we took a trip to Portland, OR to see Destruction Unit and CCR Headcleaner play at the Know. The show was great, both bands were loud and heavy.

The show was over rather early, and a friend invited me to a show at Valentine’s. I caught the last band, Azul Toga. Live the band were rough around the edges, but the songs were there. The hooks were undeniable. The band and the head songwriter for the trio shows a lot of promise. With some practice and tightening up, I think they could really “go places”.

The bands soundcloud page shows a different side of the band. The previous stuff is more electronic. I am guessing that either the band is switching things up or moving in a new direction, or it could just be the difference between playing alone and with a group/live rhythm section. Either way, it does not matter. Like I said, the songs are there.

Recommended if you like Orange Juice, Vivian Girls, Indie Pop, mellow synthy keyboard pop, or slowcore.

SHOCKWAVE RIDERZ 12”

The other day I was playing this 12” for a friend and we talked about how cool it is. This Shockwave Riderz 12” is very limited and if I am not mistaken, out of print. It’s very mysterious, and I saw that the band is playing Arizona soon, which is odd as the order placed for these records was to a location in Philadelphia, and I think the order came post marked Portland, Oregon. I could be remembering this all wrong though.

The three tracks contained on this disc marry the sample bending ecstatic note ripples of Panda Bear with the starkness and beauty of Suicide. there is a little twang in there recalling the Cramps mixed with the sunglasses at night/strobe light strangeness of Indian Jewelry. That about sums it up right there. How could you not be interested?!?!

If none of those references mean anything to you, allow me to break it down like this…the music is sexy, spacey, ecstatic in a tingly feeling inside or the feeling of being aware that your hair is growing. It’s dark and cool as in leather jacket cool, and could fit in well in the bedroom, at the Pony, in a movie, or on the beach.

Check it out here, If you like it, come see us about the vinyl.

The 12” is one sided, with three tracks. It comes with badges and a download card.

Going to the Know in Portland to see CCR Headcleaner.

OMG! “Finding Vivian Maier”!! Documentary! Go see it. In theaters now and on On Demand, too!

This Saturday should be crummy weather.

This is a bummer as we won’t be going out, but we will be DJing at Speckled & Drake on Saturday from 9:30pm-1:00am! We will have LPs for sale.

GVR MAN WILL BE DJing tonight at LINDA’s TAVERN! COME OUT 9pm-12 midnight!

YEAAAHHH???? ToT

ICHI NI SAN SHI - Slow Truth
$12 (plus tax)
Hello, Gold Van Fan! How have you been? We just returned from SXSW and, while we have had this album since our last trek to Austin, TX back in February 2014, we had a chance to see these folks ICHI NI SAN SHI (Japanese for 1,2,3,4) and we were able to buy some copies for the van from their label Super Secret Records (an Austin, TX institution…see also Kingdom of Suicide Lovers). This band is one of Ruben’s personal new faves.
Let me tell you about the live experience (which I admit, I wasn’t sure after hearing this wonderful quirky pop lp that they would be able to do it, but they pulled it ALL THE WAY OFF.) First off, the drums are controlled by a nice lady and a table of samplers and drum machines, there are keyboards, bass, an incredible and colorful guitar player, and a lead singer in Austin, TX legend Bill Jeffries! Bill’s stage presence, much like the band is playful, happy, and energetic. (That description of the band also sums up the sound of the album, btw) Bill has spent time lending his voice and trumpet skills to many bands in Austin, TX since the 90’s, way back when I lived there, and I feel the others are just as well seasoned as they all RIPPED IT UP. This is a special record.
This wonderful debut, Slow Truth by ICHI NI SAN SHI combines pop, psyche, and noise with cool electro-beats and is done well by these seasoned musicians. They keep it weird, sure, but they make it POP.The band will most likely not tour, but that does not mean that you would not enjoy this LP on your turntable tonight.
See you this weekend (March 22nd in front or around Rudy’s on Capitol Hill), weather permitting. In the meantime, THIS LP IS IN THE VAN!

Thanks for listening!
